PERF-1

a live-performance generative instrument for the FM-1, in the browser: the same code the FM-1 runs

Turn your phone sideways for bigger controls.

Off. Sound starts when you switch it on.

Play it from your FM-1, or any MIDI controller

Plug the FM-1 in by USB and press Connect MIDI (Chrome, Edge or Firefox; Safari has no Web MIDI). With PERF-1 on the FM-1, press SEL + GLO on it: its panel then plays this emulator exactly (buttons, the 27 keys, every knob and MASTER), its own sound goes quiet, its screen says REMOTE, and its lights follow the screen here. SEL + GLO again gives it back, stopped. (It speaks MIDI channel 16: keys are notes 48 up, buttons CC 102 up, knobs CC 85 up, MASTER CC 7; the lights come back through the FM-1's own MIDI output, which the browser has to see under the same name.)

With M-VAVE's firmware, or any other keyboard or controller, its notes play the keys here straight away (any channel, folded into F3 to G5). For the rest use MIDI learn: press MIDI learn, click a knob, button or key on the panel, then move or press the control you want on your controller. A knob needs a knob or slider (a CC); a button or key takes a note or a CC (64 and over is down). A learned knob can be absolute or relative (64 ± n, or 1 up and 127 down): pick it in the list below, which also lets you forget one. What you learn is kept in this browser. MIDI clock, SysEx and program changes are ignored.

Pages and knobs

SELECT steps through the 23 pages in this order, and stops at the ends: Tempo, Pad, Pad env, Pad LFO, Chords, Mixer, Bass, Bass env, Bass LFO, Acid, Acid env, Acid line, Pluck, Pluck 2, Drums, Links, Kit, Drum drift, Space, Reverb, Master, Global, Jam. The line above the knobs shows the page's name and a dot per page at its right, and at its left the voice's sound plus BY HAND, +LINK or an octave (OCT+1, or SONG+1) when they apply. The buttons jump to a group of pages; pressing the same button again steps through the group, and from another page it comes back to where you were in that group. KNOB 1 is a voice's level on its first page. There are ten genres of ten pieces (PRESETS picks piece 01 to 10, GLO + PRESETS the genre), each piece with its own settings and six drum patterns. Changes last until the power goes off unless you store the piece (Global, SAVE; the HYPNO genre only).

Tempo HOME

Tempo, Evolve
70 to 190 BPM (also HOME + SELECT from any page, or tap tempo: hold GLO and tap E4); how restless the acid line and the chords are.
Motion, Drift
How far the slow tide swings between sparse and full; how long a chord lasts, 20 s to 5 min (with the auto-DJ on SYNC it also sets how long a groove lasts).

Pad ENV, ENV, ENV, ENV

Pad
Level, Bright (the pad's filter), Sound (one of 24, see Sounds below), Detune.
Pad env
Each voice's breath: Attack (0.05 to 10 s), Hold (0 to 8 s), Release (0.1 to 12 s), Rest (0 to 6 s).
Pad LFO
Rate (a quarter note to 32 bars), Depth, Shape (sine, triangle, saw, square, sample and hold, drift), Target (filter, level, pan, pitch).
Chords
Chord (Auto: sevenths on a 7-note scale, triads on a pentatonic; Triads; 7ths; 9ths: 1 3 7 9; Sus: 7sus4; Dub: a minor 9 shape on every chord, in the scale or not; Fourths: stacked fourths, an m11), Voicing (close or open), Chorus (0 to 100, the pad's ensemble) and Root (as on Global).

Mixer SELECT

Track, Level
Which layer you are mixing (pad, bass, acid, pluck, drums); its level. The page draws a fader and a live meter for each layer and the output's peak.
Pan, Send
L100 to R100 (C leaves the sound as it was); how much of the layer goes to the echo and the reverb (50 as it was, 0 none, 100 twice).

Bass LFO, LFO, LFO

Bass
Level, Sound (one of 24), Cutoff, Reso. OCT− / OCT+ its octave.
Bass env
Trigger (each chord, every 1, 2, 4 or 8 bars, or off), Attack (0.01 to 4 s), Decay (0.05 to 16 s), Amount (on the cutoff).
Bass LFO
Rate, Depth, Shape, Target (cutoff, pitch, level, drive). By default a 16-bar sine on the cutoff.

Acid ARP, ARP, ARP

Acid
Level, Cutoff, Reso, Env mod.
Acid env
Decay, Accent, Slide, Sound (one of 31).
Acid line
Density, Length (1 to 16 steps: odd lengths turn against the bar), Range (1 to 3 octaves), Mutate (how often steps are made anew). OCT− / OCT+ move it an octave (on any Acid page).

Pluck ARP four times, five times

Pluck
The counter-melody: two plucked voices taking turns on an arpeggio of the chord's tones, fewer notes in a breakdown. Level (30 by default, 0 for none), Sound (see below), Density, Octave (−2 to +2; OCT− / OCT+ move it too).
Pluck 2
Decay, Style (up, down, up-down, random, skip, thirds), Rate (1/8, 1/16, 1/4, 3/16), Range (1 to 3 octaves).

Drums SEQ (hold: sequencer)

Level, Drive, Swing
The kit's level; the kick's drive; how late the off sixteenths come (50 to 75 %).
Pattern
One of six. A new pattern waits for the end of the bar, so turning past others on the way plays none of them.

Links SEQ, SEQ

The drums into the voices
SEL + SEQ turns them on and off (+LINK shows above the knobs). K>Bass: each kick opens the bass's filter (a rolling bass). S>Pad: each snare or clap flashes the pad open. H>Acid: a hat on an acid note accents it (these three are 0 to 100). P>Clock (off or clock): the acid steps only on the perc lane's hits (free again in a breakdown).

Kit SEQ, SEQ, SEQ

Kick, Snare, Hats, Perc
Each drum's sound, one of 14 kits (the snare takes the clap with it, the hats both closed and open). The Break kick also chops and crushes the drums live. SEL + ALGORITHM here: all four at once.

Drum drift SEQ four times

Change, Every
The patterns change by themselves: Off, Next, or Random from the Pool; with each chord change, or every 4, 8, 16, 32 or 64 bars. A fill rolls in the bar before.
Pool, Mutate
The patterns it uses (1-2 up to 1-6); Mutate: Off, Shift moves a hit or two, Morph also adds or takes one (the kick stays put). These four settings stay when you change piece or genre.

Space SELECT

Echo, Echo time
The tape echo's send; its time (1/8, 3/16, 1/4, dotted 1/4, 1/2 or a bar).
Reverb, Size
The reverb's send; how long it rings and how often the echo returns.

Reverb SELECT

Type, Damping
Plate; Shimmer (the tail an octave up, fed back into the tank); Gated (the sound opens the tail and it shuts again after a hold). Damping is how fast the highs die away.
Predelay, Amount
6 to 30 ms; the shimmer's feedback, or the gated tail's hold (80 to 400 ms). The page draws the tail for the type.

Master SELECT

Ratio, Thresh
The compressor over the whole mix: off, 1.5:1, 2:1, 3:1, 4:1, 6:1 or 10:1; its threshold, −30 to 0 dB.
Make-up, Ceiling
0 to +12 dB; the limiter's ceiling, −12 to 0 dB. The page draws the compressor's curve and live meters for the compressor, the limiter and the output peak. Each genre brings its own compressor settings; MASTER (the knob at the top left) is the volume after all of this.

Global GLO

Root, Theme
The key's root; the screen's colours (Synth, Acid, Ice, Ember, Phosphor).
Tune, MIDI out
Fine tuning, −50 to +50 cents; MIDI out over USB (the FM-1 only). Theme, Tune and MIDI out are kept across power-offs (written a couple of seconds after a change).
SAVE (here)
Stores the piece as it is: every setting, its six patterns, its drums' sounds, its scale. Hold it 1.5 s to put the piece back to its factory settings (and out of the store). Only the HYPNO genre stores; the others say NOT STORED. The line above the knobs says whether the piece is stored, factory or changed; a dot in the piece's tag means unstored changes.

Jam SELECT, after Global

Voice, Keys
What the 27 keys play along with the music: pluck, pad, acid or bass; SCALE (a black key plays the scale tone at or below it, so no wrong notes), CHORDS (a triad of the scale on every key), HARP (the scale's tones, one a key, from C3). The keys never edit the scale here.
Octave, Answer
−2 to +2; with Answer on, once you stop (after two notes or more) the pluck plays your phrase back an octave up on a bar line, once. The voice you play leaves its own line while the page is up.

Sounds, and playing a voice

Each voice has its own bank of sounds, stored with the piece. SEL + ALGORITHM steps the sound of the voice on screen (a Pad, Bass, Acid or Pluck page), or the whole kit on the drums' pages; its name shows at the left of the line above the knobs. The Sound knob on the voice's page does the same.

Pad 24 sounds

Rhodes, Voices, Strings, Glass, Organ, Warm, Stabs, Dark, Dub, Trance, Poly, Hollow, Pings, Hits, Rave, Sine, Ooh, Wurli, Mallet, Brass, Fat, Pluck, Chapel, Air.

Bass 24 sounds

Saws, Warm, Grit, Dirty, Reese, Pulse, FM, Organ, Rumble, Sub, Square, Hoover, Fifths, Metal, Sync, Bright, Wub, Bite, Tine, Clang, Gnarl, Wide, Power, Air.

Acid 31 sounds

Saw, Square, Driven, Sync, Pluck, PWM, Chip, Sub, Trance, Bleep, Fifth, Bell, Organ, Laser, Fold, Soft, Marimba, E.Piano, Kalimba, Brass, Gong, Clav, Vibes, Digital, then Super (five saws spread), CZ (phase distortion), Mini (a monosynth bass), Hyper (a wider Super), CZ Pulse, CZ Bell, Lead.

Pluck 12 + 22, and yours

12 plain: Pluck, Marimba, E.Piano, Kalimba, Bell, Vibes, Gong, Clav, Digital, Brass, Bleep, Glass. 22 built-in DX7 voices: DX Tine EP, Glass Bell, Round Bass, Brass Sect, Soft Pad, Wood Bars, Drawbars, Nylon Pick, Brass 2, Solid Bass, Bells, Marimba, Clavinet, Strings, Glass Pad, Sync Lead, Harp, Kalimba, Flute, Steel Drum, Saw Bass, Tubular. After them, up to 16 DX7 voices of your own, which you load into a real FM-1 (see the last section).

Kits 14, for each drum

Hypno, House, Techno, Acid, Break, Minimal, Hard, 808, Dusty, Heavy, 909, Electro, DnB, Trap.
  • The keys set the scale on every page that does not say otherwise: each key adds or removes its note (the root stays, and at least three notes remain). They are lit where the scale is. ALGORITHM picks the mode (Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, Pent maj, Pent min; the page says Custom once you have edited the scale).
  • By hand: on a Pad, Bass or Acid page, hold SEL and press ENV to take that voice off the algorithm. It goes quiet (BY HAND shows above the knobs), and on its pages the keys play it over the song: the pad up to four notes, the bass and the acid the last key held (the acid sliding between held keys, as a 303). It works while stopped too. SEL + ENV again gives it back.
  • Jam (the last page on the dial) plays the pluck, pad, acid or bass from all 27 keys, always in the scale, without touching the scale.

The sequencer (hold SEQ)

  • Six lanes: kick, snare, clap, closed hat, open hat, perc. Sixteen steps each.
  • The sixteen white keys (the lower row) are the steps of the drum you're on: they light where it hits, and a tap turns a hit on or off. The light running across them is the playhead.
  • OCT− / OCT+ step through the drums. SELECT leaves for the next page.
  • The knobs: the lane's Level, Tune (−50 to +50) and Decay, and the Pattern. It edits the pattern chosen, even before it plays.
  • With SEL held: white keys 1–6 pick the pattern to edit, black keys 1–6 copy the pattern you're editing into pattern 1–6, OCT− clears the drum's lane, OCT+ puts the piece's own lane back.
  • SEL + a knob (on the lane OCT−/OCT+ chose): KNOB 1 fills the lane with a Euclidean pattern of 0 to 16 hits (0 clears it), KNOB 2 turns that pattern round, KNOB 3 sets the lane's probability in steps of 5 % (a hit sounds that often; the lane's name shows its chance under 100), KNOB 4 sets its length, 1 to 16 steps.
  • A lane shorter than 16 counts from the start of the song, not the bar, so a 5-step hat against the 16-step kick comes round again every 80 steps (polymeter). The sequencer marks where it ends (L5) and dims the steps beyond.
  • SEQ again goes back to the Drums page. The patterns, probabilities, lengths and the lanes' sounds are the piece's: store the piece (Global, SAVE) to keep them.

Buttons

  • Keys (27, F3 to G5): the scale. On the pages of a voice taken off the algorithm they play that voice; in the sequencer the white ones are the steps; in the FX menu they are effects; on Perform and the visualizers, or with GLO held, they are the track mix; on Jam, an instrument.
  • PLAY plays / stops. REC freezes: the chord holds and the reverb rings on (REC lights; press again to thaw). EDIT the next chord, on the next bar.
  • HOME Tempo; on Tempo, again for Perform; twice quickly from anywhere for the visualizers; held 0.7 s for the settings page.
  • ENV Pad, Pad env, Pad LFO, Chords. LFO Bass, env, LFO. ARP Acid, env, line, Pluck, Pluck 2. SEQ Drums, Links, Kit, Drum drift (held: the sequencer). GLO Global (held: the track mix).
  • OCT− / OCT+: an octave down or up, to three either way. On a Pad, Bass or Acid page, that voice (the pluck: two either way); on any other page, the whole song. The line above the knobs shows OCT+1 or SONG+1. In the FX menu, OCT− puts everything back: locks off, mutes and solos clear, the FX knobs home (an undo is on GLO + B3).
  • SAVE is the breakdown: tap it and the breakdown starts on the next bar and lasts until you tap again, which brings a four-bar build and then the drop. Held 0.5 s in a breakdown or build it is the drop, on the next bar. It lights while a breakdown or build runs and blinks while one waits for the bar. On the Global page it stores the piece instead (held: factory settings). It is written at once: playing, the music fades out for a moment while it is written, then picks up where it was.
  • FX opens and closes the effects menu (below). ALGORITHM the mode; PRESETS the piece (01 to 10). On Perform and the visualizers ALGORITHM is the mood instead. MASTER is the volume.
  • SEL is a shift (hold it alone for 0.4 s and the screen lists what it does): white keys 1–6 (F3, G3, A3, B3, C4, D4) pick pattern 1–6 (lit: the one chosen; it waits for the bar), PRESETS picks a piece that comes in on the next bar instead of at once, ALGORITHM changes the sound of the voice on screen (the drums: the kit), SEQ turns the links on and off, ENV takes the voice on screen off the algorithm, FX walks the effects' settings pages, a key in the FX menu opens that effect's page, and GLO is remote mode (on the FM-1 itself).
  • Hold ENV, LFO, ARP, GLO, EDIT, REC, OCT− or OCT+ alone for about a second and a card on the screen says what it does.

Effects (FX on)

FX opens the menu: the 27 keys become effects, named on the screen against their note (F3 is the lowest white key). Tap a key (under a quarter of a second) and it latches on; hold it and it plays only while held; tap a latched key to turn just that one off. The SELECT dial walks four banks (it stops at the ends); the four dots at the right of the line above the knobs show which. Close FX and the latched effects keep playing (FX shows in the header, and the FX button blinks); open it again and tap a key to turn that one off. Each kind of effect has its own colour on the screen: repeats cyan, filters green, gates and pump yellow, mutes red, colour effects pink, transport moves orange, builds violet.

FX knobs FX, or Perform

Filter, Crush
A DJ filter: left of centre is low-pass, right is high-pass, the middle off; a bit crusher.
Throw, Wash
The echo send; the reverb send. They are never stored, and KNOB shows in the header while one is off its home.

Settings pages SEL + a key, SEL + FX, FX FX

Getting there
In the FX menu, SEL + a key opens that effect's settings page (an effect with none says so). SEL + FX walks the pages in order from the first, FX pressed twice quickly goes to the page of the effect you used last, and the SELECT dial walks them (22 pages, one dot each). FX alone closes. The effect is on while its page is up, so you hear what you set (for a roll, riser, scatter, brake, half time, scratch, freeze and reverse swell, hold any key to hear it). They are remembered across power-offs.

Performing

Perform HOME on Tempo

The screen
The section (groove, break, build) and the auto-DJ's place in it, the bar's 16 steps, the eight tracks (kick, hats, snare, perc, bass, acid, pad, pluck) as live meters, the four scenes, what is on in FX, and the mood bar.
Keys, knobs
The keys are the track mix (below, no GLO needed); the knobs are the FX knobs; ALGORITHM is the mood, chill to peak (0 to 100, 50 leaves the piece as it is): it moves the acid, the pluck, the hats and percussion, the pad's brightness, the bass's cutoff, the drive, the reverb and echo and more together. SELECT goes on to the pages.

Track mix hold GLO, or Perform

Mute, solo
F3 mute kick (the black key above, F#3, solos it), G3 hats, A3 snare, C4 perc, D4 bass, F4 acid, G4 pad, B4 pluck (F#5 solos it), A4 / A#4 all four drums.
Others
B3 undo (again: redo), E4 tap tempo, C5 to D#5 scenes 1 to 4, E5 reset everything, F5 auto-DJ on / off, G5 new piece each round. Held GLO shows the map, plus the load meter and the auto-DJ's phase.

Scenes GLO + C5 to D#5

Tap, hold
Tap recalls a scene (at once, or on the next bar: Scenes on the Perform settings page); hold 0.6 s stores the state as it is now: the effects locked on, the mutes and solos, the FX knobs. A recalled scene glides the FX knobs to its values. Scenes are kept until the power goes off.

Auto-DJ GLO + F5

What it does
Runs the sections by itself on the bar clock: a groove (8, 16, 32 or 64 bars), a drum fill as the groove's last bar, a breakdown (4 bars, half the groove or as long as it, by Break), a four-bar build with the riser rising, and the drop; then again. DJ shows in the header. With G5 on, the next piece comes in on the fill's bar. SAVE by hand just moves it on from there.
SYNC
The fifth Groove setting: the groove lasts until the chord changes (the Drift setting on Tempo sets how long); the bar before is the fill, the change's bar the breakdown.

Breakdown, build, drop SAVE

By hand
Tap SAVE: a breakdown on the next bar. Tap again: a four-bar build, then the drop. Held: the drop on the next bar. The header says BREAK, BUILD, or BREAK> / BUILD> / DROP> while one waits for the bar. The Key setting can lift the root on each drop (it goes back at the next breakdown).

Genres GLO + PRESETS, or Settings

Ten, of ten pieces each
HYPNO (the original techno and acid; pieces 01 to 10; the only one that stores), LOFI (L01 to L10, 70 to 94 BPM, swung), HOUSE (H, 118 to 126), DUBSTEP (D, 136 to 150, half time), DUB (V, 64 to 76), DNB (N, 170 to 178), BREAKS (B, 100 to 135), GARAGE (G, 126 to 138, swung), ELECTRO (E, 118 to 130), TRAP (T, 130 to 150). The dial wraps. The same piece number keeps playing, and the genre brings its own drum patterns, kits, sounds and latched effects (vinyl, tape, pump, phaser). Changes last while you stay in a genre.

Settings HOME held

Key, Saver
The key change on the drop (same, +2, +3, +5, +7 semitones); the screensaver (off, 1, 3 or 10 minutes: left alone while playing, the visualizers take the whole screen; any key, button or turn brings the page back).
Lights, Genre
Off or show: on the visualizers the keys' lights follow them (chasers and kick / snare flashes in a groove, breathing in a breakdown, filling up through a build); the genre, as GLO + PRESETS. SELECT walks to the other settings pages, FX leaves.

Visualizers HOME twice quickly

Eight
PLASMA, KALEIDO, BARS (a real spectrum), FLUX, DISCO (the mascot dancing over a floor of the drum pattern), LIFE, ORBIT, AUTO (a new one at each section change and every 32 bars). SELECT chooses; the knobs stay the FX knobs, ALGORITHM the mood, the keys the track mix, FX opens its menu over them; HOME leaves for Perform.

Mouse, touch and keyboard

  • Drag a knob up or down, or use the scroll wheel over it. Click or touch buttons and keys (several fingers at once work); Shift-click (or right-click) a button to hold it down, click again to let go.
  • White keys 1–8: Q–I, 9–16: A–K. Black keys 1–10: 1–0, black key 11: -.
  • Space PLAY, Enter REC, Esc HOME, V ENV, L LFO, P ARP, M SEQ, O GLO, C EDIT, ` FX, B SAVE, N SEL, Z / X OCT− / OCT+. A held key is a held button, so hold M for the sequencer or N with another key for SEL combinations.
  • ↑ ↓ turn SELECT. The other knobs (ALGORITHM, PRESETS, KNOB 1–4, MASTER) have no letter: use the mouse, or press Tab to a knob and turn it with the arrow keys.
  • Hover a control for a one-line tip. Stream view (a button under the panel, or ?stream on the address) shows the FM-1 and its screen large on a 16:9 stage for capturing.

Power-on, and what is remembered

Each start shows deamonSLINKY (and its slinky), then PERF-1, then plays a piece of the HYPNO genre at random (any button or key skips ahead): as you stored it, or a little changed from its factory settings if you never did. New start powers it off and on. Kept in this browser across power-offs: stored pieces (HYPNO only), the theme, Tune and MIDI out, the effects' settings (every settings page), the performing settings (scene timing, auto-DJ, key change, saver, lights, Jam) and the visualizer. Not kept: what is latched on, the FX knobs, the mood, the scenes, mutes and solos, the genre. Forget stored clears everything kept. It is the firmware, not a recording: what you hear is PERF-1 running, at the FM-1's 44.1 kHz.

What the emulator cannot do

  • Load your own DX7 voices, read the load telemetry, or send MIDI out: those need a real FM-1 (the installer page has the DX7 loader and a live status panel). Here the Pluck has its 34 built-in sounds only. MIDI clock, SysEx and program changes are ignored.
  • The load under the pattern (CPU, XR) is only an estimate of this computer's time: XR stays 0 and there is no second core. Writes to flash are your browser's storage.
  • Remote mode is started on the FM-1 (SEL + GLO, with PERF-1 or HYP-1 on it); SEL + GLO on this page does nothing special. MIDI needs Chrome, Edge or Firefox.

PERF-1 is by deamonSLINKY, a fork of HYP-1 by RedtailWorks (GPL-3.0). The idea of running FM-1 firmware in the browser comes from Groove OS's emulator.
